Sector

Location

Year

Duration

26 Weeks

The Brief

The proposed works are to upgrade the LV electrical building services installations at Eastbourne station, due to it being at the end of its serviceable life, with the installation & commissioning of new services being carried out prior to the removal of any existing services.

Areas of works included the main concourse and associated offices, platforms, train crew, new DNO room and carpark areas.

The works within this brief included the following:
• New DNO service
• Main Switchgear
• Submain Cables and Distribution Boards
• Final Circuit Wiring
• Lighting and Emergency Lighting Installation
• Small Power Installation
• Containment
• Earthing and bonding
• Feeder Pillar installation
• Connections to existing services (Points Heating, Gateline, Retail units)

The Approach

KH Engineering Services have worked with Bam and undertaken initial site investigations and removal of redundant services.

A 26 week programme of normal working hours was agreed and the planned LV upgrade to the station commenced.

The Challenges

During the second week site meeting, KH Engineering Services was made aware of the train crew accommodation refusing any works that would directly or indirectly effect their area during normal operational hours.

After approximately 1 week of negotiating with the train crew, a shift pattern of work was agreed to take place between 01:00 to 05:00, with any “noisey” works to take place during weekend shifts.

The Delivery

Due to the challenges imposed by the train crew, KH Engineering Services revised the existing programme to include an additional night team, to work in continuation with the day team, to complete works with minimal disruption to the station services. Additionally, a Saturday shift was programmed in for any loud works taking place within the train crew area.

Due to the operational and safety impact on the engineers working shift patterns and the impact of travel times, KH Engineering Services rented local accommodation to house the engineers for the duration of the works.

The Outcome

Despite the initial setbacks to the programme, KH Engineering Services delivered the project within programme and budget.
